What is post-traumatic stress disorder?
PTSD Symptoms
PTSD brings a vast plethora of symptoms with it. Many individuals with this disorder:
- relive the triggering event via intrusive flashbacks, memories, and nightmares
- avoid certain situations that remind them of the past trauma
- and are anxious to a point where their routine and relationships also tend to get disturbed
Apart from flashbacks, the two other main symptoms are emotional detachment and jumpiness. With jumpiness, a sudden noise is so staggering to them that they drastically overreact, while emotional detachment is a feeling of being distant from loved ones – and feeling emotionally drained.
PTSD Treatment
Treatment for PTSD begins with going for a mental health screening, followed by interaction with a qualified therapist. Dr. Kishore Sunkara suggests that through grief counseling and psychotherapy, individuals with PTSD often begin to reframe their thoughts and compose themselves towards the traumatic events. They can then start their journey of letting go of their shame and guilt, which are often related to past memories. Medication, which falls under the categories of antidepressants and anti-anxiety, is also a way to lead. With a combination of these methods, patients can reduce or completely eliminate the symptoms caused by the disorder and live happy lives.
