Benzodiazepines and Mental Health

Your psychiatric wellbeing is very important to me. As your psychiatrist, I would educate and provide you with information to help you understand your medication options. I believe in being transparent in my philosophy of the use of Benzodiazepines and we will work together in order to help you achieve your optimal level of mental health.

Here are some examples of Benzodiazepines and their generic names:

Ambien – Zolpidem
Ativan - Lorazepam
Klonopin – Clonazepam
Restoril – Temazepam
Valium – Diazepam
Xanax – Alprazolam

The above-mentioned benzodiazepines are used in patients who are suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. However, these medications on a long-term usage can cause physical and psychological dependence. Symptoms of withdrawal may include, shakes, tremors, and in extreme cases, seizures. They are also highly addictive and abusable.

There are non-addictive anti-anxiety medication options available. Together we can evaluate some of these options in medications and psychotherapy to help control your anxiety and panic symptoms.

If you are ready to take the next step into this journey, I will safely taper you off of the Benzodiazepine over the next few weeks. During that period, we will be utilizing non-benzodiazepine medications as well as behavioral modification therapy to help you reach your goal.

When you are ready to make these transitions, please call our office to make an appointment. We will be happy to assist you on your path to find your BEST SELF.

Best wishes,
Dr. Sunkara
